Creating A Safer Working Environment With CERTA

With the intensions of increasing personal safety and reducing property loss due to building fires, the Certified Roofing Torch Applicator (CERTA) program is has been a major player in providing effective training over the past decade.  Endorsed by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association (MRCA), CERTA is designed to familiarize commercial roofing contractors and their employees with the proper procedures for installing torch-applied polymer modified bitumen sheet products.  In 2003 , the insurance industry began conversation with the NRCA and MRCA to refine old safety training techniques and organize an effort to develop new strategies to overcome the rising incidents of losses occurring due to poor torching related practices.

One major U.S. insurance underwriter reports their numbers as follows:

Year         Claims          Loss Amount

2002           46              $13,784,800

2003           23              $7,822,500

2004           20              $3,901,000

2005           13              $3,717,500

2006           14              $1,583,500

2007           10              $287,800

In addition to ensuring the safety of the roofing installers and building occupants, the CERTA training program has also been largely influential in lowering financial losses for the roofing contractors, building owners, and insurance companies.
